Mac Classic

Since first launching this website the name hasn't sat right with me and I have long tossed up changing names/domain name. The term Classic is an ambiguous term in the vintage Macintosh space for multiple reasons.

The Classic environment was an emulated environment created by Apple that allowed Mac OS X users to run applications built for Mac OS 9 under OSX. To most Mac users who went through this transition period, Classic is immediately relatable to the Classic Environment.

The original intention behind the word Classic was to convey timelessness/vintage. This website doesn't focus on the Classic Environment or the Macintosh Classic/Classic II, and the name was poorly thought out from the beginning.

Proposed Changes

To address this I'm leaning towards renaming the website to Mac Attic. I've owned the mac-attic.com domain for over 10 years, and while it was used briefly before mac-classic.com, it has sat abandoned during most of this time. I intend on keeping the mac-classic.com domain, so I would permanently redirect mac-classic.com to mac-attic.com where this website would be hosted.

The term "Classic" is a retronym; we all agree on that. Nobody referred to the operating system as 'classic' at the time. It's also true that it overlaps with the Classic Environment. However, the term "Classic Mac OS" has become popular, because it reflects the vast difference between the old system and the *nix architecture, and prevents confusion (much as the difference between Coke Classic and New Coke). I think with consistent use of terms, this is not a decisive difficulty. I think of the terms as something like this: Classic Mac OS: Any primary operating system that came on a Mac(intosh) computer, up to and including Mac OS 9.2.2. Classic Macs: In the broadest sense, any Mac capable of booting some form of the Classic Mac OS. (A more specific sense might limit it yet further to beige machines, but by now, these computers are all older than the difference in ages between them.) Classic: As a noun, properly the Classic Environment. Can be used as an adjective for the Classic Mac OS, in contrast with newer Apple OSes ("The Classic way of doing things"). Might be used as a slangy shorthand for the Classic Mac OS, in the right context where it's already been established that the OS is what's being referred to. Mac Classic: A specific computer made by Apple back in the day. I think the main trouble here is not your use of the word 'classic' but the order of the words. The adjective coming after ("Mac Classic" vs. "Classic Mac") is unusual in English, so this does lend itself to assuming it it a Mac Classic fan site. (Albeit a site that is a good resource for Mac Classics is also likely to be a good Classic Mac site.) There's nothing wrong with the alternate name "Mac Attic", and if you wanted to use that you'd do well. But there's no reason to be afraid of the word 'classic'. The trouble is that you have mac-classic.com, not classic-mac or classic-macs.com. ;-)

Well said, I completely agree with you!
I'll close the poll in the next couple of weeks but It looks like most people are content with the current name, so it may be a case of remaining with the unfortunate name combination. Either way It's not a huge issue, more of a minor annoyance I've had.
